Yoga/Liz Gilbert

It’s kind of funny that Liz Gilbert has taken up so much of this blog since none of us liked her or her book very much, but then again, women are always talking most about women they want to trash…so more talk!

I started doing yoga with my mom and my sister this week and so far I have gone two times. This new endeavor has brought our old friend Liz to mind (also a friend of my sister is doing transcendental meditation, she’s just been everywhere in our life!). I have done yoga in the past, and I found it not very relaxing and it eventually begin to irritate my already ruined back. But this time, whew! it has been a completely different experience.

At the end of the first day, we meditated. I found it hard to bring the monkey back – the thing that happens when you try to concentrate on one thing and your mind wants to jump to your guilty feelings about not calling someone back. When I got out, I felt lightheaded, my cheeks were flushed and I was quite giddy. My sister and mother were feeling this same vibe. We all came home, had a couple glasses of wine and the vibe surrounding us had this bubble like quality. Needless to say, something had happened in that class and it probably had something to do with the yoga.

What I am saying is that Lizzie might be on to something with all of her meditation talk. It has an addictive quality, and maybe she thought that it could replace her addiction to men. I also felt the practice of yoga influence my feelings during the regular day when my mind started to wander and I instinctively brought it back to center. Instead of dealing with anxiety or wandering thoughts in an expulsive, Woody Allen diatribe, it might be better to let them exist and then float away.
